Gustave Courbet was a painter, sculptor, communard of French nationality, whose art style can primarily be attributed to Realism. Woman with White Stockings is one of several explicitly sexual paintings Gustave Courbet produced during the 1860s. Sleepers (Musee du Petit Palais, Paris), for example, a scandalous canvas of 1866, shows two nude women entwined in erotic abandon; The Origin of the World (Musee d'Orsay, Paris), though it does not show a sexual act, is even more radical for its frank, close-up view of female genitalia. In the latter painting, the body is truncated at the knees and breasts.The present work shows a nude woman reclining outdoors, wearing only one red shoe and a long stocking pulled up over her knee. Her clothing sits piled in the grass, while a body of water appears at right; in a sense, then, the painting contains the conventional tropes of the bather-in-a-landscape subject. Yet here, the contained sensuality of the traditional bather picture is turned inside out, and the viewer is given a full glimpse of the woman's sex. Indeed, this is the picture's subject, as it is in The Origin of the World, though here a hint of narrative heightens the erotic effect. While the sexual act is not shown, it is implied. The nude looks seductively at a presence outside the frame-this is perhaps a moment postcopulation, as she sits awkwardly pulling on her clothes. The setting is strange, uncomfortable, as she leans near a precipice and rests her naked bottom next to a dirt path. This is not nature in harmony with the female body, a la Pierre-Auguste Renoir, but rather nature used, hastily, as a place for sex. Both Sleepers and The Origin of the World were commissioned by the Turkish diplomat Khalil Bey. While the early ownership history of Woman with White Stockings is unknown (Albert Barnes bought it from the dealer Henri Barbazanges in 1926), it is likely that it, too, was originally a commission made for private enjoyment; the work was never exhibited during the 19th century. There is some speculation that the painting represents Courbet's mistress, Leontine Renaude. This seems unlikely, however, as Courbet ended the relationship with Renaude in 1862, two years before completing this picture.
